The City of Port Washington takes
great pride in its municipal facilities. The renovation of City Hall
is the latest upgrade that improves the efficiency of City services.
The renovation is the first to City Hall since its construction in
1958.
City Hall was opened in July of 1958. The total
cost to construct the original City Hall was $277,373.00. The
original City Hall housed City Council Chambers, Administration
Offices, the Engineering Department and the Police Department.
Previous to the construction of City Hall, the property housed a
Community Hall. This building was used for a variety of purposes
such as a movie theatre, basketball court, boxing area, beer garden,
boarding house, public library, American Legion quarters and a
theatrical group known as the Port Players.
Plans to renovate the City Hall Building were
informally discussed when the Police Department building was
constructed in 1995. The idea was to more efficiently use the office
space on the first floor and create new offices in the basement
area. Construction bids were approved by the City Council August 7,
2001. Construction formally began in September.
Renovation took approximately nine months to
complete. The renovation project was completed in May of 2002 and
the first City Council Meeting held in the renovated Council
Chambers was May 21, 2002.
The total cost to renovate City Hall was
$1,636,093.00. The breakdown of the renovation costs are as follows:
Construction: $1,414,704.00
Furniture: $
87,783.00
Architectural: $ 133,606.00
TOTAL $1,636,093.00
The architect for the renovation project was
Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik & Associates, Mequon, Wisconsin. The
general contractor and sub-contractors were as follows:
- General Contractor: WB Corp., West Bend, WI
- Electric: K. W. Electric, Inc., Plymouth, WI
- HVAC: J & H Heating, Inc., Port Washington, WI
- Plumbing: Haucke Plumbing & Heating, LLC, Plymouth, WI
- Furniture: CJ & Associates, Inc., New Berlin, WI
Now completed the renovated City Hall houses new
City Council Chambers and Administrative Offices on the first floor
that includes the Mayor, City Administrator, and City Treasurer’s
Offices. The lower level has new offices for the City Engineer,
Director of Planning and Director of Building Inspections. A new
conference room was also constructed in the lower level.
The newly renovated City Hall is a great asset to
the City and downtown area. The building is more user friendly for
the residents in our City. The City appreciates the time and efforts
of City staff in the development of this renovated building and a
special thanks to the taxpayers of Port Washington for their support
of this project.
