The shipwreck Niagara is the focus of the first of a number
of planned maritime exhibits developed by the Maritime Heritage
Experience. The Niagara was built in 1846 and was 245 feet in
length. Considered a "palace steamer", it was propelled by
sidewheels and built for fast and luxurious lake travel. Tragically,
the Niagara sank in 1856 when a fire broke out in the evening
of September 24th killing dozens of people. The wreck
lies approximately 8 miles north of Port Washington. |
