Second call of Selectmen of Ozaukee County -1917

I found the photo seen in a box of old family photos that belonged to my mother-in-law, Marie Schachel, who will be 90 this month (March 2000). She would have been seven years old when the picture was taken.

I must assume that these "select men" were the second group from Port Washington to be drafted to serve in World War One. I'm sure few in the photo are still living, unless one of the children, and even then, they would be in their late 80s, early 90s.

Lighthouse at Sunrise - Photo by Kay WulffIt is just a delightful little look at Port Washington, circa 1917. The only thing that looks even familiar to me is the Pilot Printing Office. My neighbor (growing up) and classmate, Chuck Schuchnecht's dad used to run the Pilot when I was a kid (1940s, 1950s). It was located on the other side of the street then, and a few blocks north.

Look at the high button shoes and long pig tails on the little girls on the left... and the flat caps and knee pants on the boys. I guess teens dressing alike is nothing new.

The streets seem to be made of dirt, and look at the trolly tracks!! I love the lady peeking out of the window above the W.E. Neuendorf store front. I wonder what they sold.
